Phil reports from Cape Town, South Africa:

The Capetownean sponsors, and OXBOW as the major brand, put a lot of effort in this 'classic' event - wich fully payed off as this Production Board Champion Ship turned out to be incredibly successful.

I was using my production JP Twinser wave 76 and my NP Combat 4.7 ,  it’s a really sweet combo, it was working really well, i could get the most out of the waves with so much ease, getting aerial’s even in side and side onshore conditions.  I had plenty of acceleration off the beach to get all the jumps I needed to rack up the best jump scores of the day too!It was a fiercely contested competition, there were over 30 guys and many of them compete on the PWA tour, so they all put up a hard fight.  It came down to a semi final between myself and Kevin Mevissen.

The judges were scoring 2 waves and 2 jumps.  I sailed a pretty good heat getting two of the best waves of the day and a solid pushloop in pretty early on, it allowed me enough time to get a good pushloop table top just towards the end to make sure of the win.  In the final i was full power on my 4.7 and the waves were around head high, i got a nice pushloop table top to start and followed it up with a couple of pretty good waves, one of which had a nice section to score a nice air over...  i know Klaas is a top sailor and was racking up the points so i needed a really good second jump to make sure.  I landed a backloop and thought i’d done enough but with 30 seconds left on the clock a nice wave rolled in and i nailed a double forward at the end to put the final nail in the coffin for Klaas.  It was still really close but the judges just pipped in favour of me and i got the title of OXBOW BIG BAY CLASSIC Wave Champion !!!

That evening we had a killer party and it was a really good social event, awesome live bands, local entertainment, it’s great to have an event that is right down with the local people, it was really cool to hang out with the 100 or so people that stuck around for the party after enjoying the action on the beach, everyone was totally stoked on windsurfing!!  I can’t wait for next year!
